Party Wall Matters

The Party Wall etc Act 1996 came into force in 1997. It governs the relationship between a building owner planning works and an adjoining owner and it regulates how certain building work is to be carried out on or near to the boundary between two or more properties.

Typically the Party Wall etc Act will apply in the following circumstances:

  • Building on or near an existing boundary.
  • Building new foundations at a depth lower than the foundations of the adjoining property.
  • Carrying out various building operations on or to an existing party wall or structure.
